Living in The Light 1- The Light of Life

The people walking in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of deep darkness a light has dawned. Isaiah 9:2 (NIV)

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. John 1:1–3 (NIV)

And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. Genesis 1:3 (NIV)

In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. John 1:4 (NIV)

Series in a Sentence: Living in the light leads to life.

  • The light in us always the darkness around us.

The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. John 1:5 (NIV)

  • The light from us is only a of light given to us.

There was a man sent from God whose name was John. He came as a witness to testify concerning that light, so that through him all might believe. He himself was not the light; he came only as a witness to the light. The true light that gives light to everyone was coming into the world. John 1:6–9 (NIV)

I am the voice of one calling in the wilderness, “Make straight the way for the Lord.” John 1:23 (NIV)

Q- Are you reflecting or detracting people from really knowing Jesus?

  • The light can be ignored but it’s to everyone.

He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize him. He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him. John 1:10–11 (NIV)

Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God—children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God. John 1:12–13 (NIV)

  • The light is fully through grace and truth.

The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth. John 1:14 (NIV)

Week 1: Discussion based on John 1:1-18 and last Sunday’s Message.

  • Why is it so significant of John to his gospel describing Jesus as “The Word?”
  • How is the metaphor “Jesus being the light” impactful to you?
  • John, the writer, describes John the Baptist as one to testify of the light. How would you hold up in the court of law as a character witness of Jesus?
  • Why did people not recognize Jesus when he came? How does this relate to missing him still today?
  • John sums up the incarnation of Christ in verse 14. How significant is it for you that Jesus came in the flesh? How have you experienced His glory personally?
  • John describes Jesus as being filled with “grace and truth.” How do we see Jesus embody both “grace and truth” that was not always popular but effective? How can we do the same as those called to live in His light and embody his glory through us to others?
