The New Version We Tell Ourselves

June 19, 2022 / Dan McEvoy / Luke 15:11-32

Question: What is the story you tell yourself?

Luke 15:11-12

Luke 15:17-20

Luke 15:28-30

1 John 4:9-10

Today’s Core Truth: At the cross Jesus flipped the script for us to live a better story.

We are no longer , but accepted.

Romans 8:1

We are no longer , but sons and daughter.

Romans 8:15

We are no longer , but more than conquerors.

Romans 8:31

Romans 8:35-37

The Challenge: Don’t let pride keep you from the party hosted by your perfect, loving Father.

    Theme: The Father’s Invitation

    Reflect Together:

What impacted you the most from Sunday’s message?

    Share Together:

Where or who can you be “just yourself” with? What is it that gives you that permission?

    Read Together:

    Luke 15:11-32

    Discuss Together:

    • What can you speculate was the motivation of the younger son wanting to leave his father? Would you have responded the same if you were the father? Why or why not?
    • How is the son’s wake-up call in v. 17 a reflection of God’s grace? Do you have a similar story where you “came to your senses?”
    • What was it about the son’s rehearsal speech that, in his shame, demonstrated he misunderstood the unconditional love of his father? How do we do the same in our sin and failures?
    • How is Jesus’ depiction of the father’s response comparable to our heavenly Father? Why do we struggle so much to truly believe and accept unconditional love?
    • After the father welcomed home the younger son whole-heartedly, what do you think were the reasons the older son didn’t react to his brother’s return so positively?
    • What is the challenge of being an “older son?” What made him blame both his brother and father? What are factors that can cause an “older son” to choose not to go to the party?
    • Which son do you relate with the most – the younger son in shame, or the other son in blame – that you would need prayer for to fully embrace the unconditional love of our perfect Father?

      Pray Together:

Take time to share how God is answering prayer, and pray over the needs in your group.
